ARTIST STATEMENT

Without the ability to visualize an idea, art would not exist. In that vein, my artwork is a constant
search for the best way to interpret the ideas which I have about myself and the world around me.
I do not limit myself to one medium, technique or concept. As my inspiration and ideas change,
my perception of the world around me and its interpretation also change. Each artwork I create is
simultaneously an extension from the past, where I have come from, what I have learned, as well
as my preview of the future.
My art is done with an intention of promoting a progressive understanding of African tradition and
culture. That is why I generate new ideas from both traditional and modern perspectives. I am
passionate about making art and communicating through such a cosmopolitan visual language.
Ever since I was a teenager, I have been fascinated by both wildlife and humanity’s
interdependence in the ecosystem. I use KITENGI CONTEMPORARY ART(KICA) as a modern
art style with African fabrics. Through this style, I create artworks which depict present day collage
arts done with patterned pieces of fabrics. KITENGI is a term used to describe such patterned
African fabrics done in different regions on the continent. These pieces of fabrics are from trashed
offcuts of garments. I collect and reuse them to creatively come up with the idea of changing
TRASH INTO TREASURE. If a viewer stops for a moment to view and reflect on a piece I have
created, then I have succeeded in my work.
I am a painter as well as a craftsman. Before becoming a passionate painter, I used to handicraft
art pieces from wood, leather, skins and other few materials under the guidance of my father who
is a self-taught artist. He also gave me some painting skills and taught me how to become the best
version of myself. Subsequently, I joined Aptech Computer Education where I graduated with an
Advanced Diploma in Software Engineering. These skills have helped me to promote my Art
Works digitally with Online social Media Marketing. I regularly exhibit my artwork both locally
and internationally. I am currently teaching my art skills to children, teens and adults at Store,
Craft Mart located in Kampala City, the Capital of Uganda.
